UBC’s Board of Governors has elected Stuart Belkin as the Board’s incoming chair. Belkin is chair and chief executive officer of Belkorp Industries Inc., a private Vancouver-based management holding company. He is also chair of Rogers Sugar Inc., which owns Lantic Sugar Ltd, Canada’s largest sugar group.

BelkinBelkin brings decades of business expertise and financial stewardship to the role. He was formerly chair of the Board of Mohawk Canada Ltd and Canadian Hotel Income Properties, and served on the boards of BC Sugar Refinery Ltd, Coastal Contacts, Timberwest Forest Ltd, Tembec Inc., and Belkin Inc.

Belkin is also well known for his community service. He has served on the boards of the Vancouver Police Foundation, St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation and as a director of St. Paul’s Hospital. He was a governor of the Canadian Olympic Association, as well as head of leadership gifts for the Lower Mainland United Way.

Belkin was born and raised in Vancouver, and attended The University of British Columbia, earning a BA in Philosophy. He has a strong family connection to UBC, encompassing three generations.

“As a proud alum of UBC, I am delighted to have been chosen to serve as chair of the Board of Governors of this great university,” Belkin said.

Belkin will replace Alice Laberge when she steps down from her role as Acting Chair and as a member of the UBC Board on February 4, 2016 after serving for six years, the maximum term permitted by the University Act.
