A highly decorated athlete, Mr. David Sidoo graduated from The University of British Columbia in 1982 with a BA in Education and Minor in Business.
He was an MVP defensive back who led his team to an undefeated season and the University’s first-ever Vanier Cup National Championship in 1982. A three-time All-Star and All-Canadian Defensive back, David was a record-breaking kick returner during his five-year career at UBC.
David played six years of professional football in the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the BC Lions. He was inducted into the UBC Sports Hall of Fame in the Athlete Category and his 1982 Team in the Team Category. David has also been inducted in the BC Football Hall of Fame in the Athlete/Builder Category, receiving the prestigious Bob Ackles award. In April 2017, he was inducted into the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame and received the W.A.C. Bennett Award for his many and varied contributions to the sporting life of this province and country.
David is a distinguished member of the UBC Thunderbird Alumni and is proud to have the David Sidoo Field at Thunderbird Stadium named in his honour. He is also a distinguished member of the Thunderbird Wall of Excellence.
David has a strong commitment to community service. In 2006, David and his family started Sidoo Family Giving (SFG), an organization actively involved in the community for the betterment of families and at-risk youth of all ages, specifically supporting children’s breakfast programs, youth arts programs, teenage sports programs, and community scholarships. Through SFG, David has been a strong supporter of The Clinton Foundation, the Street To Home Foundation, and the UBC and New Westminster Secondary School football programs.
In 2016, David was appointed to the Order of British Columbia, the Province’s highest form of recognition. He has also been honoured by the Government of Canada with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the NRI Award, presented at the House of Lords in London, England, for his tireless work in the community.
David has been recognized frequently in Vancouver Magazine’s Power 50 and was voted by The Vancouver Sun as one of the Top 100 South Asians making a difference in BC.
Professionally, after retiring from football, David went on to become a Partner at Yorkton Securities, consistently generating commissions that ranked in the top five nationally. David left Yorkton in 1999 to pursue private investment banking.
David sits on the board of many Oil & Gas and Tech companies and has been a founding shareholder of many start-ups. He is responsible for funding early stage start-ups in the oil and gas, mining, biotech and technology sectors. Most recently, he was founding shareholder of American Oil & Gas Inc., which was sold to Hess Corporation in late 2010.
Currently, David is the President and CEO of Advantage Lithium, a resource company specializing in the strategic acquisition, exploration and development of lithium properties which is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
