May 10, 2022

Welcome, everyone.  It is good to be back on campus once again.

I would like to acknowledge that UBC Vancouver is situated on the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the Musqueam people, and that UBC Okanagan is situated on the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan Nation.  Many Board members and UBC community members are joining us remotely today from many places near and far, and I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners and caretakers of those lands.

The May meeting of the Board of Governors is a regularly scheduled meeting of the Board, not preceded by Committee meetings as are Board meetings held in March, June, September and December.  Therefore, there will be no Committee reports at this meeting, which presents an opportunity for the Board to transact business between its meetings of March and June.

This will be the first Board meeting for our newest Board member, Tashia Kootenayoo, who is the student-elected representative from the Okanagan campus.  Welcome Tashia!  We look forward to working with you.

I also wanted to take this opportunity to welcome Gage Averill to his first Board of Governors meeting as Provost and Vice-President pro tem for the Vancouver Campus.  Thank you, Gage – we are very pleased to have you here.

Our next Board meeting will be held on June 29, on the Okanagan campus.  Given the pandemic, we have not been able to travel there for over two years.  We are very much looking forward to visiting the campus and the sunny Okanagan in June!
