December 2023 | Interim Chair Appointment

Announcing the Interim Chair of the UBC Board of Governors

I am pleased to announce that Mr. William Sundhu has been appointed as the Interim Chair of the UBC Board of Governors, effective January 1, 2024.

Mr. Sundhu assumes the role as current Chair Nancy McKenzie completes her six-year term as a Governor, and as Board Chair since 2020. On behalf of the University, I would like to thank Ms. McKenzie for her leadership over the last three years as the university navigated through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the transition to a new president. Through this period, UBC has remained focused on key priorities, including commitments to Indigenous reconciliation, equity, inclusion, sustainability and to strong financial management in support of the academic mission.

Mr. Sundhu has served UBC as a Governor since 2018, including as Co-Vice Chair of the Board for the past two years. From 1996 to 2007, he was a BC Provincial Court judge and is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia and Canadian Bar Association, and List Counsel of the International Criminal Court.  He is a respected speaker and commentator on human rights, justice, diversity, equality and international legal issues, and received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee medal in 2002.

Mr. Sundhu will serve in this role until a new Chair is elected by the Board of Governors.

On behalf of UBC, I would like to thank him for stepping into the role and look forward to working with him as Interim Chair.

Honourable Steven Lewis Point
Chancellor
