Kareem Hassib

Mr. Kareem Hassib is a second-year student at UBC’s Vancouver campus. Kareem also sits on the UBC Vancouver Senate as a Student Senator At-Large. Elected at 18 years old, Kareem is one of the youngest governors in UBC’s history. Kareem is undertaking a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies, a unique program housed in both the Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts and the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) in the Faculty of Applied Science.

With a strong academic background, Kareem is a recipient of the Governor General’s Academic Medal for graduating at the top of his high school class. Some of his other academic achievements include winning the BC Achievement Scholarship, Thomas D. Sale Scholarship for Excellence in History, and the Friends of Nanaimo Jazz Society Scholarship, amongst others. Utilizing his unique multi-cultural background as a half-Japanese half-Egyptian Canadian, Kareem also works part time at the UBC English Language Institute (ELI) as a Cultural Assistant. Kareem also has over 350 hours of volunteer experience with the City of Nanaimo, and has volunteered with other non-profits and environmental advocacy groups.

With a background in political organizing, Kareem is the Vice-President of the Vancouver-Quadra NDP Electoral District Association (EDA) and the Recording Secretary of the Vancouver-South Granville BC NDP EDA. He is an Executive for both the BC Young New Democrats, the official youth wing of the BC NDP, and the UBC NDP campus club. Outside of politics, Kareem is also an award-winning multi-instrumentalist who has performed with various prestigious musical ensembles and honour bands, including the MusicFest Canada Conn-Selmer Centerstage National Honours Jazz Band, and has won several music-related scholarships. Kareem is also active in the UBC Jazz Club.
